Context Sensitive Solutions
Summer Academy 2008 |
CTE, in
cooperation with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, conducted the 2008 Context Sensitive Solutions Summer Academy from May until August.
The Academy provided students with an opportunity to develop an appreciation and working knowledge of CSS principles in order to support their future professional goals.
Dr. John Stone and Dr. Joe Hummer, both from the
Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at
NC State University, led the participants through coursework and
case study activities. In addition to classroom instruction, students participated in both group and individual
field trips. Students also worked as paid interns with
the North Carolina Department of Transportation where they were placed
in positions that directly addressed environmental concerns in transportation. The research component required students to analyze NCDOT projects to determine CSS-related costs in relation to construction and operations.
On August 8, the participants of the 2008 CSS Summer Academy completed their internships and provided oral presentations of the results of their research to a group of local area practitioners and faculty
researchers. The students received CSS certificates of accomplishment and the opportunity to circulate
their resumes to agencies and organizations seeking new hires who
possess a broader understanding of transportation and environmental
issues.
